OUR LEARNING MODELS
Students whose families have selected the blended learning model will receive a mix of both in-person and virtual instruction.
Students whose families have selected the fully remote option will receive instruction virtually (online) only.
MORE ABOUT OUR BLENDED LEARNING MODEL
For our blended learning model, PS 170 has selected Model 1A of the NYC DOE models, with half of the blended learning students being placed in Group A (the yellow group) and the other half being placed in Group B (the blue group).
Students in this model will attend school in keeping with the following schedule:
- Group A (yellow):
Students attend school in-person from 8:50AM-2:20PM on all Tuesdays and Thursdays as well as the first and third Monday of every month. On all other days, students will receive a mixture of synchronous (live) and asynchronous (assigned) work through their Google Classroom. See this month's blended learning calendar for specific days to attend in-person.
- Group B (blue):
Students attend school in-person from 8:50AM-2:20PM on all Wednesdays and Fridays as well as the second and fourth Monday of every month. On all other days, students will receive a mixture of synchronous (live) and asynchronous (assigned) work through their Google Classroom. See this month's blended learning calendar for specific days to attend in-person.
In-Person Day Arrival:
Students will be allowed entry into the building starting at 8:50AM. For arrival, all students and parents must line up outside in front of the school, being mindful of social distancing. There will be markers on the sidewalk closest to the school to help with distancing but please continue to maintain a 6-foot distance between families along the line. Parents must wait with their child until they reach the entrance (no dropping off from down the street) and all family members in line over the age of 2 must wear a mask. If you do not have a mask, the school will have extra disposable masks on hand to give you. Students will have their temperature checked at random at the entrance to the school. Please be sure to arrive on time and be patient with us throughout the arrival process.
In-Person Day Dismissal:
All classes will be dismissed from outside the building, regardless of weather, beginning each day at 2:00PM. More specific information on exact dismissal times and locations will be coming soon. Please be prompt to pick up your child and the same rules regarding masks and social distancing from arrivals will apply.
Online Learning Days:
On the days that your child is not attending school in person, this is not a day off. Your child will have work assigned to them in their Google Classroom. Some of this work may be asynchronous (independent work, completed without the teacher live in front of them), and some of it will be synchronous (live learning with a teacher). All of the work assigned to your child on the days that they are online is equally important as their in-person instruction and will be expected to be completed on time. Your child's teacher will post a schedule each day of assignments and live instruction sessions. Teachers will also be available for office hours every day from 2:20-2:40 to help with any technical or academic problems you or your child may have. If you or your child need help on their online learning days during other hours, you can email their teacher, using the staff directory, or contact Ms. Baez, the school secretary at email@example.com or via phone at (718) 583-0662.
MORE ABOUT OUR FULLY-REMOTE OPTION
Students whose families have selected the fully-remote learning model will receive all of their instruction online, through our school's Google Classroom. At the beginning of the week, and again each day, your child's teacher will post a schedule that includes the work they are responsible for completing that day as well as times for live lessons using Google Meet. Some of this work may be asynchronous (independent work, completed without the teacher live in front of them), and some of it will be synchronous (live learning with a teacher). Your child will be responsible for attending all live sessions with their teacher(s) as well as for completing any assigned work for that day. Teachers will also be available for office hours every day from 2:20-2:40 to help with any technical or academic problems you or your child may have. If you or your child need help during other hours, you can email their teacher, using the staff directory here, or contact Ms. Baez, the school secretary at firstname.lastname@example.org or via phone at (718) 583-0662.
ACCESS TO MEALS
"Grab-and-go" breakfast and lunch will be available to all PS 170 students, regardless of learning model selection on all school days.
If your child is participating in the blended option, on the days they are in school, they will receive a bagged breakfast at their classroom door, to be eaten during morning meeting/ arrival time in class. Later in the day, in-person students will also be provided with a bagged lunch to be eaten in the classroom.
If your child is participating in the fully-remote option OR is in the blended option on a day their cohort learns virtually, they may still pick up "grab-and-go" breakfast and lunch from the school between the hours of 9:30 and 10:00AM.
SAFETY AT 170
Students and staff will be trained in the 4 core actions required to help keep safe from COVID-19 in schools.
- Wear a mask:
All staff, students, and visitors to the building will be required to wear masks at all times. If you or your child does not have a mask upon arriving at school, PS 170 will have disposable masks on hand for you to use.
- Social distancing:
All students will be seated at desks and spots in the dance and phys ed classrooms that are spaced at least 6 feet apart. The school will also have markers on both the stairs and throughout the hallways to help the students keep mindful of their distance.
- Hand hygiene:
Students will be required to wash hands frequently and hand sanitizer stations will be placed throughout the building. Upon arrival in the morning, students will be required to sanitize their hands before entering the classrooms. Students will wash hands after eating breakfast and lunch and at other intervals throughout the school day. All students will be educated in proper hand-washing technique by their teachers.
- Staying home when sick:
All students and staff at PS 170 will be trained to know the symptoms of COVID-19 and are asked to stay home if they notice any of them. Symptoms include: a fever of over 100 degrees F, cough, shortness of breath, chills, muscle or body aches, headache, sore throat, congestion, runny nose, loss of taste or smell, nausea, or diarrhea. Parents are asked to evaluate their child's health by checking for any symptoms and taking their child's temperature each day before coming to school. PS 170 will be administering random temperature checks for students entering the building and anyone exhibiting any of these symptoms will not be permitted to attend school for that day. Additionally, if your child or anyone they've been in contact with has tested positive for COVID-19, you are asked to quarantine and inform the school IMMEDIATELY so that we can act to safely manage the situation for others who may have been exposed.
"High-touch" areas of the school (like doorknobs and handrails) will be disinfected by our custodial staff frequently throughout the school day. Additionally, all classrooms will be disinfected nightly by our custodial staff to be safe for the next day's class to use.
